DME; Distance Measuring Equipment
OUR COMMENTS ON DISTANCE MEASURING EQUIPMENT
Brought to you by
APG - Eastern Avionics International
Even in a GPS overlay environment, DME is still one of the most capable and useful tools in the IFR-equipped aircraft. It provides the essential
distance, ground speed, and time enroute information that you need to navigate the airspace system. It also gives a pilot lower minimums on most approaches,
including many that are published specifically for VOR-DME-equipped aircraft.
This can make the difference between landing at home or having to divert to
an alternate in bad weather. For this reason alone, DME systems are always
high on a pilot's list of must-haves. Give us a call at APG-Eastern Avionics and
we can recommend a DME that fits your needs, airplane and pocketbook.

BEWARE OF OLD DME UNITS
There is some temptation on the part of pilots flying 1970 vintage
DMEs to keep them on life support long after they should be buried. Unfortunately,
old DMEs do not die gracefully. Most of them clean out the wallets of unsuspecting
owners for years before they realize the money spent on repair bills would
have bought them a new DME. Many avionics shops try to keep their customers'
old DMEs working against their better judgment. Unfortunately, those shops
frequently get a bad reputation from the customers they try to help because
the DMEs they fix never seem to stay fixed. As a general rule, any DME with
a single or dual digital display of any type built in the 1970s should be
avoided. If you already own one, be kind to yourself and bury it the next
time it goes belly up!
On the other hand (with no exceptions that come to mind), all
the modern units with triple display gas discharge readouts work very well
and should give you years of reliable service.
