Collision Avoidance Systems
OUR OPINIONS ON COLLISION
AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS
Brought to you by
APG - Eastern Avionics International
We were all taught the see and avoid concept
when we first learned to fly. The fact is that normal pilot workloads make
it difficult if not impossible to keep vigilant all of the time. Over the
years nearly every pilot has gotten uncomfortably close to another aircraft.
Too often the combination of high pilot workload during the approach and departure
phases and high traffic density near airports result in near misses or midair
collisions. Over 95% of all mid-air incidents occurred in VFR conditions.
In most cases, there was no ATC traffic advisory to either aircraft involved
due to the nature of VFR flight. Had either aircraft been alerted of the presence
of nearby traffic, the pilot would have been attentively looking out for it.
Most incidents reported occurred in the General Aviation segment. Typical
scenarios include: flight training in congested areas, traffic at busy uncontrolled
fields, and popular scenic routes. Even worse the potential for extreme closing
rates when flying enroute reduces your time to react to a potential collision
to a few seconds. It is for these reasons that the need for continuous traffic
awareness is more important than ever.
At APG-Eastern Avionics we offer many solutions:
The ZAON/ShureCheck systems, Avidyne/Ryan, Monroy systems, Ryan TCAD systems, ProxAlert and the
L3/Goodrich "SKYWATCH" system. Brief yourself on the capabilities
of these systems and then call us, our all-pilot staff can recommend the best
system for your aircraft and budget.

Avidyne/Ryan TAS-600 Traffic Advisory System
$9,990.00 $8,989.00 On Sale!
Avidyne’s TAS600 Traffic Advisory System bring affordable active-surveillance traffic detection to the instrument panels of single and light twin general aviation aircraft. Traffic Advisory Systems (TAS), which are based on the technology originally developed for air-transport category traffic alert and collision avoidance systems (TCAS), have been available for general aviation aircraft for several years, but have been costprohibitive for many owner-flown aircraft. Until now. With the new TAS600 Avidyne offers a feature-rich, value-priced system that is fully TSO certified, surpassing the performance capabilities of many highercost traffic systems and setting a new standard for active-surveillance traffic capability and affordability. Recommended for entry-level, single-engine piston aircraft, the TAS600 features a 7nm range, a 3,500-foot vertical separation maximum and 18,500-foot service ceiling.
It provides a full 30-second decision time at a closure rate of up to 1200 knots. The system interrogate transponders from nearby aircraft and provide a warning to the flight crew when the calculated time to closest approach (CPA) of any intruder and the protected area around the aircraft reaches the 30-second threshold.
Using Ryan Active Surveillance™ (RAS) technology it detects and actively interrogates other aircraft transponders within range, displays the surrounding traffic on a compatible display system, and provides audible alerts in the event of a potential traffic conflict.
Active Interrogation gives the precise location of nearby aircraft, providing realtime traffic information with no delay. Having an active traffic system is vital to providing a full measure of safety, in busy terminal areas as well as in non-radar airspace. The TAS600 system provide realtime traffic monitoring and advisories, is not radar-coverage limited, and is not dependent on ground-based systems.
The TAS600 provides three levels of alert, so pilots can monitor traffic before it ever becomes a threat.
The first level of alert is indicated on the display as an open diamond shape, with the altitude separation indicated between the host and threat aircraft and an arrow indicating if the threat aircraft is climbing, descending, or at the same altitude. This is referred to as Other Traffic (OT). OT is not an immediate threat but is within the surveillance area and the pilot should be aware of existing traffic.
The second level of alert is Proximity Alert (PA) and is displayed with the same information as OT, with the exception that the diamond shape is now a solid shape on the traffic display. Both OT and PA alerts are white on a color display or are not highlighted on a monochromatic display.
Traffic with a calculated intercept course for altitude and direction become a Traffic Alert (TA). When a TA is encountered, the intruder traffic is indicated as an yellow circle.
When a traffic conflict is eminent, pilots need the right information in real time. First-generation traffic systems only provide a “Traffic Traffic” audible alert, which then requires the pilot to look down at the display to locate the relative bearing and distance of the intruder aircraft before looking out the window. Avidyne’s exclusive Heads-Up Audible Position Alerting™ verbally indicates the conflicting aircraft’s bearing, range and relative altitude for rapid visual acquisition of traffic. This automated voice alert uses the same alert terminology as Air Traffic Control.
This type of alert provides the data a pilot needs to keep his attention focused outside the cockpit, scanning for oncoming traffic.
Standard with the TAS600 system, Avidyne’s patented directional top and bottom antennas provide optimum signal coverage around the host aircraft, enabling faster updates, providing enhanced performance over single-antenna systems, and maximizing safety. INSTALLATION, TESTING AND CERTIFICATION AT OUR FLORIDA FACILITY IS REQUIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER. PLEASE CALL US FOR AN INSTALLATION ESTIMATE.
