Encoding Altimeters

Welcome to the Encoder Guidebook

AIRCRAFT ALTITUDE ENCODER AND DIGITAL SERIALIZERS

Brought to you by
APG - Eastern Avionics International

Twenty years ago, the full faced encoding altimeter was the only type of encoder you would generally find in aircraft. The altimeter had an encoder in it that would connect to your transponder to provide Mode "C" altitude information. These units were expensive, sometimes costing thousands of dollars.

Today, solid state blind encoders are the best option for most of us. These inexpensive boxes are universal and connect to any modern transponder. Installing them is pretty straightforward for any good shop. Quite simply, you just connect the static line to the encoder with a "T" fitting and wire the encoder lines to the transponder.

The latest encoders provide standard outputs for your transponder and serial digital data output (RS-232) that allows a simple interface to your GPS system. With Altitude data now going to your GPS accuracy is exceptional and GPS IFR approaches are possible. If you're adding an IFR GPS to your aircraft and have the space for an additional box you can also use a low cost digital "Serializer". Serializers connect to the output of your existing encoder and convert the standard output to the serial output required by your IFR GPS.

The ultimate in safe and confident flying is achieved by taking digital altitude data and interfacing it to an Altitude Management System like the Shadin AMS-2000 described below.

(Squawkers Beware... Just a little note for possible altitude cheaters out there. When ATC informs you of an altitude variation, touching up your altitude with the adjustment knob does not decrease your odds of getting violated. All encoding systems, whether they are built into the altimeter or not, transmit your altitude corrected to 29.92 inches, or standard barometric pressure. ATC's ground equipment makes the altitude corrections directly onto the controller's screen. In short, what you dial up on your altimeter has no effect on what they see on their screens. As a friend in ATC once noted, you won't get violated in any case for a 200 foot deviation, but the guys on the ground will rank you as an amateur and treat you accordingly. For instance, you may be directed around their airspace, rather than allowed to take a more direct route on through. The bottom line is still that you should do your best and fly the numbers and clearances.)

At APG-Eastern Avionics, we've got a wide variety of altitude encoding and management systems. From the most sophisticated counter pointer models, to serial data units, to full faced versions, to budget priced blind models, the staff at APG-Eastern Avionics can handle all your altitude encoding and altitude management requirements.

ar850.gif Narco AR-850 TSO'd Encoder (15 Pin)
$280.00 $202.00 On Sale!

The NARCO AR-850 is a very reliable encoder that comes in three different versions depending on the altitude your aircraft is certified for. The standard 20,000 ft. model is fine for most aircraft. The 25,000 and 30,000 ft. models use a different 25 pin connector that makes them direct replacements for the AR-500, an older, now obsolete NARCO encoder.

SPECIFICATIONS: Meets or exceeds TSO C88(a) Dimensions Width: 4.30" (109.2 mm) Height: 1.74" ( 44.2 mm) Depth: 6.41" (162.7 mm) Weight AR 850 Unit: 0.70 lbs. (.318 Kg.) AR 850 Tray: 0.09 lbs. (.041 Kg.) Electrical Input Power 11 to 32 VDC at 1.4 amps maximum during the first 3 minutes of operation. 0.35 amps average after 3 minutes of operation. Mounting AR 850 can be mounted using holes provided in unit base or with the optional tray mount. AK-850 (25 Pin) is also available.

HOT TIP!! This name brand costs a little more but it's worth it especially if you own a AR-500 that needs replacement.
