Eastern Avionics: Refurbishing Old Radios
(Avionics News; June 1985)Located in Batavia, NY (near Buffalo), Eastern Avionics has grown steadily for four years in the reconditioned radio business. Its successful combination, explained by president Jim Kantor, is thorough refurbishment, a 3-month warrantee, cosmetic treatment that restores the radio to like-new appearance and fast payment to dealers who provide Eastern's inventory.
Another sales-booster is the prefabrication of wiring harnesses to simplify installation in the field. This may apply to a simple navcom-indicator combination, or a full radio stack. The cut-off year for refurbishing an old radio is about 1965. Before that, the equipment is too depleted or-spare parts difficult to obtain. Typically, the radios run between four and eight years old.
The selling shop can phone Eastern while the customer is still present and obtain a quote on the old radios. At the same time, there can be negotiations among the parties to mix and match new and old equipment, or add refurbished items to the airplane, depending on the pilot's budget. It is not unusual for the pilot-customer to save 50 percent or more in acquiring used avionics. Most dealers, Jim Kantor reports, are fair in their transactions with him and Eastern responds with fast payment for the old radios. On the rare occasion when items are misrepresented, it's usually due to extensive corrosion or circuit damage from severe overvoltage. But most of the time, the equipment can be refurbished inside and out to everyone's satisfaction.
President Jim Kantor, left, confers with Peter Kwaak of Maine Aviation. Mr. Kwaak is avionics manager of a shop which performs the overhaul and recertification of Eastern's radios.
Technician Rick Bodekor, left, shows wiring harness to Elmer Draper, salesman for Eastern. These custom prewired harnesses are sent with the radio package to simplify installation at the customer's shop.
