VNS CORPORATION VNS1000 Voice Directed Guidance Annunciator System Operating Tips
When the VNS1000 is used to enhance situational awareness, the pilot may use his own techniques and be prompted by the VNS1000 to correct whenever he deviates from On Course or On Glidepath. However, if the flight tips methods are used, a more structured and less pilot technique oriented instrument approach can be realized.
1. Turn the VNS1000 "ON" when approaching the Localizer and after the CDI flags and needle movements are stable.
2. To insure that the VNS1000 becomes active, maintain a intercept heading to the Localizer until you hear the "On Course" voice prompt.
3. Turn to the Localizer heading and listen for course correction voice prompts.
4. For "correct left/right 2 deg", roll into a half standard rate turn, count "one thousand one" then roll out. Concentrate on maintaining the wings level. If correcting to course, the "hold correction" voice prompt will be heard. If not, follow the 2 deg correction voice prompts until correcting to course. After "hold correction", note the compass heading for reference. NOTE: If the command is "correct left/right 2 degrees" you will know that you are one dot or less off course without looking.
5. For "correct left/right 3 deg", roll into a half standard rate turn, count "one thousand one, one thousand two" then roll out. Concentrate on maintaining the wings level. If correcting to course, the "hold correction" voice prompt will be heard. If not, follow the 3 deg correction voice prompts until correcting to course. After "hold correction" note the compass heading for reference. NOTE: If the command is "correct left/right 3 degrees" you know that you are more than one dot off course without looking.
6. Once "On Course" is intercepted, turn to the Localizer heading and note if you are drifted off course by a crosswind or are just being sloppy. If drifting off course due to a crosswind, correct back to course using the compass heading that you noted when you got a "hold correction". When back on course, make a wind correction of one half the value that originally brought you back to course (one half the heading correction), then follow the voice prompts. If you are just being sloppy, just follow the voice prompts.
7. Hold the initial approach altitude until you hear the "On Glidepath" voice prompt. If holding the exact altitude, this will be at the outer marker. Establish the predetermined power setting, descent rate, and airspeed. After stabilizing, correct to glidepath following voice prompt directions. The amount of correction depends on pilot technique. NOTE: If the command is "you are above/below the glidepath", descend/climb to glidepath, you will know that you are one dot or less off the glidepath without looking. If the command is "way above/below the glidepath", you will know that you are more than one dot above/below the glidepath without looking.
8. Be patient. After making a correction, listen to see if it had the desired effect. Don't concern yourself so much whether an exact suggested correction has been made, but rather see if the correction you did make moves you in the desired direction.
NOTE: The visual CDI or HSI presentations are always the primary reference. The pilot action relative to CDI/HSI malfunctions should follow the same procedure he would if the VNS1000 were not present and the VNS1000 should be turned off. In the event of a conflict between the CDI/HSI presentation and the VNS1000 messages, the VNS1000 should be turned off/not used. However, if there is conflict between the VNS1000 and the CDI/HSI presentation, the HSI/CDI should be considered suspect and only followed with great caution.
